Social Media for Education Class

Google Drive and Google Docs. Google Drive can let class more easily. Teacher and students can use only one paper to discuss something, and everyone can write their ideas on that paper at same time. And it can let teacher and students use it anywhere, it is really convenience for class. Next is Google Docs. It can create pictures, equation and many things just like Microsoft Office. Teacher can use it to publish announcements, and students can use it to help them stay organized and keep on top of their assignments.

       Google Hangouts. You do not need to spend many time to chat with your friends, you just use video to chat with them. And you can use any electronic products to sign your Google Hangout to chat with your friends. I think Google Hangout is good for discuss homework. Because you can talk with your classmates, everyone can talk their ideas, and they can find a good way to solve problems by discussing.

       Scoop.IT. I think Scoop.IT can be used in search something. You can type some key words, and it can find many articles which has those key words. And you can share your article with your friends. Your friends can reply your article and give you some suggests. It also can be used on IPhone and Android. That means students can use it everywhere.

       Twitter. Teacher can use Twitter to make a video about class, it can help some students who do not able come to class, and some students can use it to take some research dairy. Also, you can download Twitter on any kind of cell phone.

       Diigo. Students can use Diigo to bookmark some information and share them in the group. It is good for team work, everyone find information about homework. Then, everyone share what they find on Diigo. Students also can use it to talk with other members what they thoughts.

       Well, I think both of them are great. As far as I am concerned, the best way is use Twitter to know the homework, use Scoop.IT to find information, use Diigo to share with people, use Google Drive, Docs and Hangout to discuss and find the best answer.


How Diigo used in education

Today, I still want to talk about our new tool—Diigo. But I want to talk about how Diigo works in students’ education. I introduced how to use Diigo in my last blog. In my opinion, Diigo is a really convenience tool, you can take notes and mark the important points, you can also put your URLs in your Diigo Library that you can review it whatever you want. If you want to know how to use Diigo in your education, we should know what Diigo has and how to use them.

The main tools that we used are Highlighter, Taking Notes and Bookmarking & Saving. If you want to use these tools, you should download Diigo on your Explorer first. Find an article you want to highlight or take notes on your Explorer, it is a big D of Diigo. Click it and you can see an “ Annotate” button, click it, you could find those tools. When you click on Highlight a highlighting cursor will appear that allows you to highlight text on the page. This highlighted text will then appear with the bookmark for the page in your library. To add a note, click on Floating Sticky Note. This allows you to make notes to yourself about things you want to remember, bright ideas that occur to you, plans for how to use the information, etc. When you go back to your library, the sites you bookmarked highlights and notes. If you added tags to the sites you bookmarked you can easily organize by topic selecting tags under My Tags. Remember, you also need to create a Work Cited for resources you use.

You also need to create a group in Diigo. So, what is a group? Just like a team, you and your team members can discuss homework and share resources. Diigo Groups provides a ground-breaking collaborative research and learning tool that allows any group of people to pool their findings through group bookmarks, highlights, sticky notes, and forum. When your group need find some information on internet, you can use Diigo Group. After you and your friends find some information that can be used for you team work. You can use Diigo to share with your team members. Just use bookmarking & saving button, choose your team group, and click share button, all your team members can see this article. If you can use highlighter to mark the important points, that will good for everyone find the main idea, and the team work will be finished quickly.

There also has a convenience way to work with your team members, you could use taking notes button to talk with your team members. You could write your idea in a note, then, you choose share with your group. When other people read this article and add notes, they could see your notes which you wrote before, they could reply your ideas, and in this way, every member can talk with each other. By discussing with other people, the whole group can find a good way to finish their work.

What Is Diggo and How to Use It

Hi everyone, today I want to introduce a tool. Its name is Diggo. Maybe some of you do not know about it. Do not worry about that. Now, I will tell you what is Diggo and how to use it.

  Diggo’s full name is “Digest of Internet Information, Groups and Other stuff”(Information). And it is a kind of bookmarks. Diggo can save the information about webpages which you make some bookmarks; you can even see what other people’s bookmarks in those webpages. You can create a group. In this group, you can talk some interesting topics with other people.

  And I will talk some tools in Diggo; First is Highlighting. When you looking an article, you find some good points or some important things in this article, you can use Highlighting. If you use it, that’s means the information will be saved. Anything you come back to this web page, the information will always be highlighted. Second is Taking notes. You can use Diggo to make notes, you just add a sticky note, add your own notes and move to anywhere in this page. If other people take a note, you will know who made it and the time. Third is Bookmarking & Saving. After you add highlighting and notes that you like, you can bookmark the page which you are on. Diigo allows the ability to add tags to help keeping everything organized and providing easy access and retrieval.

You can also choose to keep your bookmark private or let Diigo put your bookmark freely available to the public. Fourth is Searching. You can use it to search web pages, URLs, tags, highlights and so on.  This is easily accessible from the toolbar of your web browser. The fifth one is Sharing. Diigo will also let you share your bookmarks, complete with annotations, to friends and colleagues. You can send the information to individuals even if they don’t use Diigo. They will receive an email with a link to the web page and a summary of any notes or

the web page and a summary of any notes or highlights that were made. The sixth is Collaborating & Using Group. Diigo allows users to join or create groups for sharing information. You can join any if the public groups that share a personal interest, join a group of colleagues or friends, or even create a group for a specific research project. The last one is Using List. Diigo provides the ability to create lists of bookmarks where you can categorize and order bookmarks to your preference. This acts similarly to Internet Explorer Favorites as an option for those who are uncomfortable with tagging.

We talk a lot about what diigo is. And now, I want to talk about how to use diigo.

  First step for students is let them have their own account. In this way, students can begin their study, and they can get more information. When teacher gives homework, some students will use internet to find some information. If he or she find some good points and hope to remember and notes it, Diigo is a good tool that can help him. He can use highlighting to mark those important points, use taking notes to write what he think at that moment, if it is a team work, he can use sharing to share with his classmates. After he finish reading, maybe he could forget some details in this article. But he use Diigo, he could find what he want when he was reading articles. He could know what his ideas when he try to take some notes. That’s really good for he to pick up his mind quickly. Students also can use it to do some research. They can use it to discuss something, or find important points quickly, just like what I said before. From a web page, I know that many students like to use Diigo. From what they said, many students choose Diigo because it has group talk, that’s means Diigo always used in group subject. And many students use it after they graduated from school. But I also find that Diigo also has short point. The first step is hard. Many people said that the first step is not easy, they always spent a lot of time try their best to accept Diigo. As far as I am concerned, Diigo is not very bad, and many people still choose to use it.

  From teachers, there has 13 reasons for teachers to use Diigo. I totally agree the reason 4 and the reason 13. Just like what reason 4 siad, students need to analyze what information is needed and what information is nor needed. By discussing with other students, they can know the knowledge in this web page clearly. And social media is really popular in today, many students has their cell phones and iPads, that’s makes teachers can have more easy way to teach their students and let them know more knowledge by using internet. I like this sentence, “It is a powerful research tool and a knowledge sharing community for teachers and students.” Yes, Diigo can really make it happened.

Cultures in China

Hi, everyone, maybe some of you heard about Greet Hofstede. He wrote a research article about Cultural Dimensions Theory Develop. In this research article, it include four part, Power Distance(PDI), Individualism versus Collectivism (IDV), Masculinity versus Femininity (MAS), Uncertainty Avoidance (UAI), and it also include many countries. As a Chinese, I am very glad to talk about Chinese cultures in this research article. Here is the link about China in 5-D models.(Here is the link about this article)

The first thing in this research article is Power Distance(PDI). Maybe some of you do not know what PDI is. OK, let me explain it, PDI is “the extent to which the less powerful members of institutions and organizations within a country expect and accept that power is distributed unequally “(From first paragraph ). This article said that China got 80 score. That means people can accept the imparity between people. Well, I think it might not exactly. There is a saying” Knowledge can changes destiny”(Jiacheng Li, Hong Kong). That is why so many students, especially poor students study very hard in high school and in university. They can go to a famous university if they study hard in high school, and they can get a good job if they graduated from a famous university. They have good jobs,  that mean they have chance to change their status in society. Why they want to change their status? They want to have good life. People really care about their status in this society, they cannot accept other people’s life is better than themselves. They do their best just want to have a life which better than other people. That’s why I say this article is not exactly.

  Second point is Individualism. Individualism is “the degree of interdependence a society maintains among its members “(From second paragraph). I think this point which Mr.Hofstede said is very correct. Chinese people always selfness. They do not want have any extra jobs. If the leader of a group or a company want to give some extra jobs to someone, it is really hard to find a person who wants to do. Because people can find many excuses to help them get away from extra jobs. They just care themselves or something that they care about. For example, some Chinese students just finish their homework after school, they do not want to review the knowledge that teacher taught today and prepare something for tomorrow.

  Third point is Masculinity/Femininity. In this part, Mr.Hofstede wants to talk about the “fundamental issue here is what motivates people, wanting to be the best (masculine) or liking what you do (feminine) “(From third paragraph). I think that Mr. hofstede ‘s opinion is not perfection. Chinese people love their families, but some time they cannot stay with their families. They have jobs, they cannot go home if they did not finish their boss’s plan, and work overtime is very common in China. But I agree that students care about their score, just like what I said in second paragraph, high score can help them to get status in society.

  And the last one is Uncertainty avoidance, “the extent to which the members of a culture feel threatened by ambiguous or unknown situations and have created beliefs and institutions that try to avoid these ” (From fourth paragraph). China has a long history, so it is really hard for foreigners to have the same thoughts like Chinese people. And I think Mr.Hofstede correct.

  After I read this article, I think what Mr.Hofstede said in this article are almost correct. But different people have different have different opinions. Maybe you have an better idea.
